Super Mario Crossover is a retro style game launched in 2010. It is based on the original Nintendo game Super Mario Bros for the Nintendo NES platform. The major and most significant difference is the ability to play as characters from other Nintendo Entertainment System games plus the ability to use “Skins” from other games and gaming platforms. Super Mario Crossover is an Adobe Flash based, in browser application that is probably best played using Firefox. Adobe Flash player is freely available as a plug-in for most internet browsers at no cost and only takes a few minutes to install. The game was created using Action Script 3 in Adobe Flash CS5 and took approximately 15 months to create. The game has eight worlds and each world has four levels. In the first three levels the goal is to reach a checkpoint in order to proceed. In the final level the player must rescue Princess Peach. Enemies such as Goombas, Kooa Troopas and Hammer Bros will try their upmost to prevent the player from reaching the end of the level. Gameplay is controlled by use of the arrow keys and the Z key on the player’s keyboard. Power ups can be acquired to boost health, shoot fireballs or to make the player invincible for a short period of time. Apart from finishing each level the player can earn coins and points in order to achieve a higher score. The player can select one of several different characters at the start of each level. Each character is based on other Nintendo Entertainment System games and use the attack movements and sounds of the from the original characters game. These characters include: Link from The Legend of Zelda, Link uses a sword and a boomerang. Mega Man has a cannon for an arm. Samus Aran from the game Metroid has a gun and she is also able to transform into a Morph Ball. Simon Belmont from Castlevania has a whip and can throw axes. Bill Rizer from Contra has a gun. This game was created by a small group of fans of the original Super Mario Bros. The amount of work that they put into this creation is absolutely astounding, re-defining the term “A labour of love”, this game really deserves recognition for all the effort put into its production.
